3.1°C has become the major headline everywhere after the United Nations warned that if countries don't accelerate greenhouse gas reductions even more, the world will warm by 3.1°C above pre-industrial levels by 2100.
We're likely more familiar with the 1.5°C figure that scientists have constantly calculated for impacts.
Knowing that the situation would be dire, world leaders convened at the 2015 Paris Agreement, where all countries committed to setting greenhouse gas reduction targets to keep global temperature rise to no more than 1.5°C by 2030.
If we fail to achieve this, take a look at the graphic below. WWF used data from the IPCC report (2018) to illustrate the impacts more clearly across land, water, and air, such as:
🔥 Global population facing severe heatwaves every 5 years: At 1.5°C: 1 billion affected At 2.0°C: 2.7 billion affected
🌊 Increased flood probability: At 1.5°C: Floods increase by 100% At 2.0°C: Floods increase by 170%
💣 But no one has yet predicted the catastrophe of 3.1°C!! Some scientists use the term "uncharted territory" – something undiscovered and unimaginable in its severity.
The world now generally accepts that our minimal efforts won't be enough to reach the 1.5°C target by 2030. With the UN's warning coming out before COP29 on November 11th, this meeting in Azerbaijan is sure to be intense.
